Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a disruptive sleep disorder in which the airways become restricted or completely closed while sleeping. This potentially dangerous condition can cause disturbances in sleep patterns and lead to the development of serious health risks. To alleviate obstructive sleep apnea, the airways must be opened and broadened to allow for continuous, optimal airflow. Typically, obstruction is caused by compromised airways in the throat, mouth, and/or nasal passages, which can be attributed to a narrow oral cavity and blockages caused by soft tissue constriction. For the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, we offer several simple, effective, and convenient mandibular advancement devices at Designer Smiles.

The Daytime-Nightime Appliance (DNA), Silent Nite®, and TAP® are all removable mandibular positioning devices that can help improve patients’ ability to breathe properly during sleep. The customized appliances are designed to gradually reposition the jaw and improve airflow through the oral cavity and nasal passages. As the jaw adjusts, the soft tissues can shift into a less obstructive, more anatomically correct position. With these devices, overall breathing capability can be optimized and the likelihood of obstruction during sleep diminished. The results of this type of treatment are permanent and offer several benefits in addition to relieving OSA, which include creating a more ideal bite (occlusion) and improving facial structure.

For many patients, mandibular advancement devices present an effective and convenient treatment option when compared to more traditional and cumbersome treatments like the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. Patients who complete their recommended treatment with the right mandibular advancement device are often significantly relieved of their OSA, enjoy more restful sleep, and benefit from a reduction in sleep apnea-related health issues.
